The Silence of the Drums A thatched-roof hut, the center of the Shinugu Festival in northern Okinawa, Japan was my backdrop for this shot. The large drum (Odaiko) and small hand-held drum (Panraku) played important roles in any of Okinawa's festivals. This one was unlike any I had ever attended, it was chock-full of ceremonial rituals involving the mountains and the ocean.
